The Power of Focus
Posted by: | CommentsCultivating the Power of Focus!
You can call it many things: The Zone, Mindfulness, being in the moment. It’s all the same thing. The goal is the bring you into focus to enhance performance. I recommend checking out an intrinsic meditative discipline such as T’ai Chi Chih. You can read a great article I wrote about 15 years ago on how focus from T’ai Chi Chih can bring you into the moment. It’s the opposite of being on a treadmill and reading a magazine.

I can do it!
Posted by: | CommentsHow to create an “I Can Do it” attitude
Most often when I am coaching or instructing people who think they can’t do something it is usually a result of poor mindset. Instead of telling yourself you can’t do something ask yourself this question “How can I do this”. By asking the right questions and using the correct wording your body will find the answers.

Stop Making Excuses
Posted by: | CommentsStop Making Excuses, Start Getting Results!
This is part 1 of 7 in a series I am doing on mindset for success in fitness.
I have been in the fitness, health, and wellness industry for a long time. I hear a lot of excuses from my clients on why they can’t do something almost on a daily basis. It blows me away at some of the ones I have heard recently. By making excuses on why you can’t do something you are sabotaging your success before you even start your journey. Stop that!
After I asked my client to write down their goals they said “I can’t write down my goals because I am a visual person”. HELLO, that’s a very lame excuse. Then right them down in visual terms…”I see myself losing 20 lbs by May 1st” would be a good example, notice I used the word “see” which is a visual. Another way to do this would be to create a vision board with pictures of the person you want to become.
Another recent excuse was the same client telling me during the same session that they could not prepare their food ahead of time, on Sunday for example, for the week and store in containers in the refrigerator because “It’s not my personality to prepare food ahead of time”. UGH! OK that was even more lame then the first one and this was in the same session. Imagine the same person coming up with 10-15 more excuses for just about everything in a 60 min (what was supposed to be) personal training session.
My point! If this is you then what needs to happened before you an reach any success is to reprogram you mind. You need to defragment the hard drive, which is your brain, and start over with an entirely new attitude.

Proper Kettlebell Instruction
Posted by: | Comments
Jillian Michaels of The Biggest Loser recently got trashed by a journalist for the LA Times about her horrible kettlebell instruction DVD and her credentials as a fitness expert. The LA Times article quoted 2 Russian Kettlebell Challenge instructors and got their opinion on the DVD. Please read the article to follow along with the rest of this post.
Here is my opinion on the article
“Jillian is doing nothing good for the fitness community by putting out a DVD on Kettlebell Training when she has no experience with kettlebells. I have people come to my Boca Raton studio all the time who have learned poor technique and actually have gotten injured by trying to learn kettlebells from unqualified fitness trainers.”
A Kettlebell, or a cannonball with a handle, has become a popular weightlifting tool from Russia and has been around for over 300 years. It started to become popular in the United States about 9 years ago when Pavel Tsatsouline teamed up with Dragon Door publication to offer the Russian Kettlebell Challenge instructor certification program. Russian Kettlebell training has exploded and become very popular with celebrities and athletes.
Kettlebell instruction requires an extensive background and training to be truly safe and effective. RKC kettlebell instructors have undergone the world’s most rigorous of kettlebell instructor certification courses and are fully qualified to instruct and train people in proper kettlebell technique.

A lady who came to one of my Kettlebell Basics Workshop talked about a kettlebell class at a local gym with ZERO instruction and a high intensity workout where the uncertified and unqualified instructors were forcing people to use very heavy kettlebells and people were getting injured in every class. She told me of her friend who has serious back issues as a result of the poor and unprofessional kettlebell class.
The solution
“I hold a 3 hour monthly Kettlebell Basics Workshop at my studio each month to teach people the fundamentals of kettlebell lifting and how to properly perform 3 exercises: the swing, Turkish Get Up, and the Goblet Squat. That’s 3 hours for 3 exercises. Can you imagine the attention to detail that goes into this type of class? How can you learn effective and proper kettlebell technique from a DVD taught by an unqualified celebrity trainer such as Jillian Michaels?”
For more information on my monthly Kettlebell Basics Workshop, check out my Meetup group the South Florida Kettlebell Club. On this page you will find out what people are saying about the group, view pictures and videos, and RSVP for the next workshop.

Testimonials from the workshop
“I thought it was a great workshop. I feel that everyone should attend this workshop, whether you are a first time kettlebeller or have used them before. Dale provides detailed and easy to understand instruction, which I believe is key in helping to prevent injuries! Dale really emphasizes the importance of learning the “movement’ first, before you start throwing around heavy weight. I highly recommend this workshop to everyone!”

“Dale is a great instructor, very clear and helpful. I’d recommend anyone with an interest in kettlebells to take his workshop”
Carolyn – Boca Raton, FL
“Totally awesome. Gave me a totally new perspective about kettlebell workouts. I really enjoy the martial arts aspect; the concentration…the “working in”. Fantastic! Looking forward to more!”

How To Hire a Personal Trainer
Posted by: | CommentsHow much does it cost to…?
What are your rates?
How much do you charge?
These are the questions I often get when somebody inquires about my services. It’s the first sentence of an email or the first question when I pick up the phone and introduce myself. It’s like people are programed to do this before they even consider anything else about the service or person who will train, instruct, or coach them to reach their goals.
I realize that people are conscious about money these days however it’s your body, your temple that you are working on improving or fixing. Are you going to try and find the least expensive doctor when you’re sick or the one who will make you well again?
The client and trainer Relationship
You are going to be spending 2-4 days a week, up to an hour each session with your trainer. There is a special bond that takes place between the client and trainer so make sure you pick the person whom you like. In addition, there are many hats the trainer will wear; instructor, coach, mentor, friend, therapist, teacher, healer, and guide. The fit pro that you hire to reach a goal is doing much more than taking you through mindless workouts and counting reps. Anybody can do that.
Don’t hire a fitness trainer, coach, instructor, or mentor on price alone. Hire the one who will help you get results and/or reach your goals. If it cost’s more than you expected and you KNOW this fit pro is the one for you then make some adjustments, find a way to MAKE it work. No excuses!
If you have a Mercedes that needs a new transmission are you going take it to Joe’s Garage to save a few hundred bucks or to the Mercedes Dealer where you know the work will be done right
After the initial scoping of their qualifications such as certifications, insurance, testimonials, and background which can usually be found on their website or brochure then you will begin the process of digging deep. Here, I have outlined the best way to find and hire the best fitness, health, and wellness professional for you:
- Can the trainer help you reach your goals? Will they assist with getting you the results you want? This is very important because your don’t want to be working with someone who will not produce some sort of result weather it’s fat/weight loss, strength increase, cardiovascular conditioning, sports specific instruction or coaching.
- Talk to them and get to know them a little. Ask them some questions about their background and philosophy on health and fitness. Find out of what you want resonates with what the fit pro is offering. Just like a relationship, there are so may different trainers out there you have to find the right fit.
- Find out if they have an initial consultation and workout session so you can test drive the service. If so, take advantage of that. Don’t expect all trainers to offer this for a FREE. Paying a small fee to find out if the trainer is the right one for you will be a good investment and surely you will learn something from the session.
- Pay attention to the questions they ask you. They should be asking questions on your health, goals, lifestyle, career, nutrition program, stress level, exercise experience, etc. They should be interested in finding out as much about YOU as possible. If they don’t ask many questions and just try to close a sale then that would not be a good sign. Don’t hire that person.
- Evaluate the value of what they offer. Try not to put a price on the service just yet. Just take a look inside, use your intuition, and consider if this is the right person to hire or not. Just like you were dating and looking for someone to have a relationship with.
- Now it’s time to take a look at the rates. If you have done everything correctly and know what this is the person who will help you get results and reach your goals then the money will not matter. You will find a way to get the money and make it happen. Chances are the rates will be ideal for both you and the trainer anyway and things will work out.
- Don’t try to negotiate the rates. That will only sacrifice quality and remember it’s your body, your temple so don’t try to cut corners. If you have to spend less per month ask if you can do less days per week or for less time per session ( I offer 50 and 30 min sessions) and then work up to what the trainer recommends at a later date if necessary. Personal Trainers are professionals and deserve to be treated with respect.
At my studio in Boca Raton, FL I offer an initial Consultation and Assessment Package that will set you on the right path to getting started with a personal trainer and explain how to reach your goals and get results.
